Thanks to their connected technology aspects, modern cars and trucks are more closely related to iPhones than Model Ts, if you even get the reference. OK, maybe that’s a stretch, but today’s vehicles do rely on a vast network of sensors, cameras and other equipment that help improve safety and performance on the road for the driver and those in the vicinity of the automobile (do we still use that word?). Collectively, these systems are known as advanced driver assistance systems, or ADAS for short. In certain situations, these systems need to be calibrated to ensure they are properly operating, which is a service provided by Empire Auto Glass. What is ADAS? As mentioned, ADAS stands for advanced driver assistance systems. These systems include a variety of safety and performance systems, such as adaptive headlights, lane keeping assistance, lane departure, blind spot warning, automatic braking, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control and others. These systems are designed to improve the driver experience and enhance safety for everyone on the road. When is ADAS Calibration Recommended? In some scenarios, these systems need to be calibrated or recalibrated to ensure that they are working properly. ADAS recalibration is generally required after: Car Accident/Collision Repair - If a vehicle has its front or rear bumpers removed or repaired, it will likely affect the function of one or more ADAS systems. Airbag Deployment - If a vehicle’s airbags go off it is generally due to an accident. As mentioned, collision repair of the front or rear of the vehicle will require ADAS calibration. Windshield Replacement - Some ADAS have sensors or cameras in or around the windshield, such as automatic high beams and lane keeping. This means recalibration is necessary if you have a new windshield installed. Wheel Alignment - ADAS calibration is often done after a wheel alignment. Suspension Alteration/Repair - If you raise, lower or repair your vehicle’s suspension system, make sure to conduct calibration to ensure all ADAS are working properly. Incorrect Alerts - If you receive ADAS alerts that prove to be false, it means the system is not properly lined up and requires calibration.
